I am in Canada right now!!

I am in canada right now!
Actually, it is my first time to go abroad.
Also, it had been a long time for me to get here by plane.
It almost costs me 18 hours to get to Ottawa.
But it does not affect my happy mood.
The weather here is cool, just like the fall of Taiwan.

FREE wireless broadband service!!

WoW, with Google TiSP you can use free wireless broadband service!
As long as you have the TiSP self-installation kit, you can surf the internet by connecting your commode-based TiSP wireless router to one of thousands of TiSP Access Nodes via fiber-optic cable strung through your local municipal sewage lines.
The flowchart is shown below.
What amazing thing it is!
I want to take it, too!!

For more information, just google it!!

Wine in Laptop

Wine in laptop!! What a terrible thing it is. But in case someday this could happen to me, i need to prepare for it. Below is a link that teaches us how to deal with such condition. Keep it in mind, it makes things better.

1. You need to disconnect all power sources to not make things worse
2. Time is not your friend.

Useful Things to Know About Ph. D. Thesis Research

This article was written by H.T. Kung.(Prepared for "What is Research" Immigration Course, Computer Science Department, Carnegie Mellon University, 14 October 1987)

link:
http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~htk/thesis.htm

There are several interesting topic in this article. In the subject 4 he presented 4 stages for a Ph.D student. And these stages are most important processes for student.
  • Knowing everything stage
    • Student: "I have designed a supercomputer even before graduate school."
    • Faculty: speechless
  • Totally beaten up stage
    • Student: speechless
    • Faculty: smiling at the student's progress so communication is possible now.
  • Confidence buildup stage
    • Student: "I am not stupid after all." (student thinks)
    • Faculty: "Uh oh, she is ready to argue." (faculty think)
  • Calling the shot stage
    • Faculty: "I am going to design an n-processor supercomputer."
    • Student: "You are crazy, because ..."
Maybe it is a good idea to translate it into Chinese some other day.

New Topic for WII

"An approach to improve the performance of WIImote via experimenting with WII sport under wireless sensor network."

Abstract

Recently my lab plan to buy a new equipment for some special purposes. The equipment is a video game console which is called WII made by Nintendo. For its new input device WIImote which contains several acceleration sensors and infrared detection, we design to purchase one. The WIImote is a new application of hybrid combination of acceleration sensors and infrared sensors, and it is also a kind of position system, since this concept is presented for a long time. But it is the first time we can see this kind of equipment in everyone`s home. Moreover, the WIImote connects to the console using Bluetooth under the wireless environment. So we bring up several new topic issues for WIImote in this project.

In order to deal with these issues, we devise several experimentations to improve the performance of WIImote. The experiment shows how we solve the problem we met during the training of WIImote. Furthermore, during the process of the experiment a new kind of algorithm was presented to point out the main problem we face. This is a new interesting topic, and we will keep on tracing it.

Opening of school

Today is the opening of my school, and i got this information yesterday. What a shake !! I thought that i still had a week of holiday left, but things were not so easy actually. So i went to school this morning unwillingly and started to execute the program that i charge with. My program is to improve the performance of a remote robot car by applying local lag or PHBDR. So i must find a way to measure the network delay between the client and the robot, and my boss give me a clue that maybe i can measure the delay via NTP protocol. Then it takes me a half day to finish a survey of NTP protocol used on Windows XP. Fortunately with the help of my parter, i find a program which conform to my need. I am so tired now and i need to take a break.
I find that my reading ability is getting a little bit improvement. Maybe it is the effect of the Modern Operating Systems which is a book written by Andrew s. Tanenbaum.

Write an article every three days

I found an interesting thing that till now i wrote an article every three days. Without any purpose, i just write down my feeling periodically and practice English writing ability every three days. It also means that i am just like an elementary school student who is involuntarily keeping diary everyday. But it is an old memory for me a long time ago. Actually every time when i decide to keep a diary for myself, i can always do it right for a while. Then i would forget it completely several weeks later. Maybe i need to write some drafts in case that someday i can not figure out any good idea for my Blog. But i am promising to keep this good habit in this month(, since this month is getting over).

By the way, i find that i write two articles in the same day before, and maybe i can take a break on next three day. Come on, just kidding.

Use Beryl on Ubuntu

What Beryl is?
Beryl is an OpenGL accelerated desktop that seeks to provide a free, open source desktop experience to the community that reflects the wishes of the users (from official site of beryl).
Well, using beryl costs a lot of resource, but it is really fantastic and attractive. Let me show some picture to you.

Writing E-mail

Recently, i read a book named "Academic Writing for Graduate Students". There is an Appendix about how to write E-mail, and the topic is interesting. I extract some paragraph that is useful to me:

Studies of politeness suggest three elements for polite requests
  1. Do not impose
  2. Give options
  3. Make the receiver feel good
Some Common Acronyms
  • AKA = also known as
  • ASAP =as soon as possible
  • BTW = by the way
  • FYI = for your information
  • IMHO = in my humble opinion
  • IMO = in my opinion
  • LOL = laughing out loud
  • WRT = with respect to

Play WOW on Ubuntu

I used Ubuntu which is based on Debian as my operating system currently, and i found that the system is pretty useful. Without massive effort, i installed Ubuntu in my computer completely in a day. In my memory, reinstalling an UNIX-like operating system costs a lot of time on tuning things(i.e., video card, audio card, language setup and X11 setup). But for the time being, it is easy for me to just "apt-get" all the drivers and softwares i need. Besides the GUI on Ubuntu is also graceful and easy to use and understand. As a Computer Science student, i believe that Ubuntu may evolve into a general operating system in the near future. Since Ubuntu is silently coming into my life, let`s see some interesting things we can do on Ubuntu.

Play WOW on Ubuntu
Actually, it is not News to play WOW on Ubuntu in these years. Because there is a software called "Wine" which can execute the softwares based on Microsoft Windows for a long time. But it is the first time i use "Wine" to play Windows game, and it really works. The pictures below show some screenshots of WOW on Ubuntu.
Nevertheless , there are some bugs between wine and scim. When i both use these two program simultaneously, the wine would freeze. The bug can be fixed by recompiling a new wine. But i want to leave it there and just let it be. ^Q^

Beginning

Well, this is my first Blog on the "Blogger". Although I had used xoops as my personal blog since i was a senior in college, but i think it is an another start point for me to write a whole new Blog. For the time being, i use English to record what in my mind and what i see to enhance my English writing ability. Actually, i am not a native English speaker,so it may be a good beginning for me. Also, it is a good chance to express the emotion deep in my mind. By using English, i don`t need to be afraid of presenting myself because it is not my mother language. Even if i write something stupid, it goes to the poor ability of English writing. By the way, today is Valentine`s Day. It is another lonely day for me. HaHa let`s get it start.
